Compare BIOS regions
A BIOS region is the console’s region, not a separate file for every country. USA is NTSC-U, Europe is PAL, Japan is NTSC-J, and China is its own console region.

What is a PS2 BIOS?
A PlayStation 2 BIOS is the console’s firmware. It is the software stored on the machine that starts the hardware and opens the system menu.
PCSX2 needs that firmware before it can start a game. The emulator does not include it. PCSX2 and the BIOS are different things: PCSX2 is the program on your computer, and the BIOS is the console firmware it loads.
A BIOS is also not a game. The game is a separate disc. Region and version describe the firmware image, which is why a dump from one console region is not a promise that every game, or every emulator, will behave the same way.
After you dump a console you own, select your BIOS directory in PCSX2. Dumping steps are in the official PCSX2 BIOS guide.
PCSX2 setup guide
Dump the firmware from a console you own, then point PCSX2 at that folder. The steps follow the current BIOS settings screen. They do not add a different method for each desktop system.

Dump the BIOS from a console you own
PCSX2 does not include a PlayStation 2 BIOS. Dump the firmware from a PlayStation 2 you own, using the official PCSX2 BIOS guide. That page is the dumping procedure. This guide does not add another one, and it does not link to BIOS files on the web.

Extract the archive when the dump is packed
If the dump is inside a ZIP, 7z, or RAR archive, extract it first. PCSX2 searches a folder for BIOS images. It does not open the archive for you. Keep the extracted files together in one folder.

Open BIOS settings and choose the directory
Open PCSX2 settings and choose BIOS. The BIOS Directory field is the folder PCSX2 searches. Browse… selects that folder. Open BIOS Folder… opens the current folder so you can place the files there. Refresh List scans it.

Confirm PCSX2 recognizes the BIOS
BIOS Selection lists recognized files, with a filename and a version. Select the row you want PCSX2 to use. If the list stays empty, fix BIOS not found: the directory is wrong, the archive is still packed, or the dump is not a file PCSX2 accepts.
Troubleshooting
If the BIOS list is empty, check the folder, the archive, and the dump. A problem that remains after PCSX2 has listed a BIOS is not automatically a BIOS problem.
BIOS not found
PCSX2 only lists a file it recognizes in the BIOS Directory. Select your BIOS directory, then use Refresh List. Point it at the extracted files, not at a parent folder or at the archive.
The BIOS is still inside an archive
A ZIP, 7z, or RAR file is a package, not a BIOS image. Extract it, leave the BIOS files in the directory PCSX2 is searching, and refresh the list.
Wrong or nested BIOS directory
The path can look right while pointing at an empty folder, a parent folder, or a folder that only holds the archive. Use Browse… and select the folder where the dump actually sits.
Incomplete or corrupted dump
PCSX2 skips files it does not recognize as a PlayStation 2 BIOS. The official dump guide warns that an active modchip can produce an incomplete or corrupted dump, and it explains how to dump again from the console you own.
BIOS detected, but the game problem is unrelated
If BIOS Selection already lists a BIOS and you have selected it, a game that still fails is not automatically a BIOS problem. Matching a region identifies the console firmware. It does not mean one BIOS runs every game.

Does PCSX2 include a BIOS?
No. PCSX2 does not ship with PlayStation 2 firmware, and the project says there is no open-source BIOS it can use instead. Dump it from a console you own. The steps are in the official PCSX2 BIOS guide.
Is a BIOS the same as a game?
No. The BIOS is console firmware. A game is a separate disc. PCSX2 is the emulator on your computer, and it loads the firmware. It is not the firmware itself.
Which region should I select?
Select the region of the console you dumped. Compare BIOS regions: USA is NTSC-U, Europe is PAL, Japan is NTSC-J, and China is a separate console region. Many countries share a region. PCSX2 can also recognize other console regions, such as Oceania, Asia, Russia, and Mexico. One BIOS is not a promise that every game will run.
Where do I select the BIOS directory?
Open PCSX2 settings and choose BIOS. The field is labeled BIOS Directory. Browse… picks the folder, and Refresh List scans it. The setup guide walks through that screen.
Why is my BIOS missing from the list?
The BIOS Directory usually points at the wrong folder, the dump is still inside an archive, or the file is incomplete. Fix BIOS not found by checking that folder and refreshing the list.
Should I extract ZIP files?
Yes, when the dump is packed. PCSX2 searches the BIOS directory for BIOS images. It does not look inside a ZIP, 7z, or RAR. Extract the archive, then refresh the list.
Can the same instructions apply across supported desktop systems?
The BIOS settings screen is the same idea on the desktop systems PCSX2 supports: open BIOS, set BIOS Directory, refresh, and select a recognized row. Dumping the console is a separate step, and the official guide covers that. This page does not add operating-system requirements of its own.
Where are the official dumping instructions?
They are on the official PCSX2 BIOS guide. Use that page to dump a PlayStation 2 you own. This site does not publish a second dump method and does not tell you to download BIOS files from the internet.
